Drug researchers are fundraising to buy a kilo of MDMA

The money will be used to fund clinical trials

Canadian drug researchers looking into MDMA as medication for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are fundraising to buy a large amount of the drug.

MAPS Canada, located in British Columbia, is hoping to raise enough money to buy a kilogram of MDMA, funding the next clinical trials and paying laboratories to produce the ecstasy component.

A dinner fundraiser is to be held on April 28, before an art fundraiser takes place on May 19.

Saying MDMA as a treatment for PTSD ensures patients find it easier to access their emotions, Mark Haden of MAPS Canada has highlighted the positive results in trials so far.

He said: "We are demonstrating 82 per cent effectiveness in one month. The empathy between people goes up dramatically."

There's even been suggestions that by 2021, MDMA could be approved by the Food and Drug Administration to be used as a treatment for other illnesses such as anxiety and cancer.
