DJ Deep & Roman Poncet
The prolific French duo return with their boldest work to date
The collaboration between French producers DJ Deep and Roman Poncet brings together a wealth of experience and the fresh ideas of one of techno's best rising talents.
Cyril Etienne, aka DJ Deep, is a legend. First inducted into DJing by Laurent Garnier who gave him the chance to play at club Boy in Paris in the mid-1990s, he has grown to become one of the leading members of the Parisian scene.
Etienne has released tracks from masters such as Kerri Chandler and Ben Klock through his label Deeply Rooted, formerly Deeply Rooted House, and has released his own stomping cuts through historic imprints such as Distance and Desire Records.
While Roman Poncet doesn't quite have the same pedigree, he has made a big impression in his flourishing career. He began making music under the alias Traumer towards the end of last decade, then started to release tracks as Roman Poncet in 2013.
A string of EPs on Len Faki's Figure label, including a collaboration with the Berghain resident, were followed by a release on Italian imprint Arts Collective, before he crossed paths with DJ Deep in 2014 when the 'Opening Moment' EP was picked up by Deeply Rooted.
The pair hit it off instantly and set the studio ablaze with the hot streak they entered. DJ Deep has noted the "magical click" he and Poncet share when producing together, with the prolific output of these collaborative sessions underlining his words.
Their first release together was under the Adventice moniker, putting out two EPs titled 'Extraction' and 'Hydraulic Jack' in two weeks in the first quarter of 2015 on Tresor. They then began to work under the name Sergie Rezza, first releasing the 'Mist' EP in June and then putting out a debut full-length just last week, both on Desire Records.
Now they're back working as Adventice. While the Sergie Rezza project takes influence from the abstract side of techno with influence from noise, Adventice takes its production cues from more classic interpretations of techno: no-holds-barred, thumping beats.
'Exsurgence' is their most relentless work yet. Arriving on Tresor, the EP is typical of the uncompromising sound pounded out in the Berlin club. Expect it to receive regular rotation in the German capital.
The lead track 'Exsurgence (Main Mix)' rolls forward with an unremitting percussion beat before the energy is hiked up with the introduction of a throbbing synth and flecks of distortion. The track continues to build with increasingly prominent hi-hats into a centrepiece breakdown before striding off again with surging pace, a pattern that is repeated towards the end of the track.
