Discogs hits $43 million worth of sales this year

Vinyl accounts for 79 per cent of sales on the online retailer

With the vinyl market continuing to surge and US sales hitting nine million units in the first half of this year, is it really any surprise wax retailer Discogs has banked an estimated $43.5 million (£28.5m) worth of transactions in 2015?

The figure's based on proprietary data the 15-year-old company gave to Billboard, revealing 2.5 million records had been sold since the beginning of the year, accompanied by 550,000 CDs and 50,000 cassettes.

Vinyl accounts for 79 per cent of sales on the site, averaging a price of $14.55 (£9.50), with 18 per cent of sales courtesy of CDs and 1.4 per cent of cassettes.

The vinyl love's been spreading all over this year, with Tesco announcing it'll now be selling it and Belgian festival Tomorrowland introducing a wax-only stage.

Of course, we couldn't write a vinyl story without mentioning DJ Sneak's opinion that "if you've never touched a piece of vinyl in your life, you're not a DJ".
