Die Antwoord will officially disband next autumn
"Die Antwoord dies on that day"
It's been a long, outrageous journey for Ninja and Yolandi Visser, the pair better known as Die Antwoord.
The South African rap-electronic duo, who debuted their first album back in 2009, have announced via an interview with Exclaim! that they will officially be breaking up in September 2017.
Frontman Ninja explains the decision: "Die Antwoord dies on that day. It's all over. I feel beautiful about it. I'm not scared of the end. I'm a Ninja. I'm not scared of death."
The group, who has remained high-profile thanks to their inherently obscure, over-the-top style and endless sold out tours, will finish off the Die Antwoord movement with their biggest spectacle to date. Ninja and Yolandi plan to showcase a monstrous art project at the Museum of Contemporary Modern Art Africa, presented by their biggest influence, Roger Ballen, plus a feature film charting the past 10 years of their careers.
According to Ninja, the documentary-like work was started before Die Antwoord was created, and gives in-depth insight into the musical act's inspiration and background.
"[It's] been our well that we've been drinking from and drawing from since the beginning. Everything in the film is fictitious, like a regular movie, but it's hard and raw, and everything has some parallel to our lives, so it's got a surreal connection to everything."
With the news of the disbandment, Yolandi and Ninja dropped the first single off their upcoming, closing album earlier today.
