DESIREE to release debut EP ‘Intersexy’

The South African artist has also launched a new label MMINO

DESIREE will release her debut EP ‘Intersexy’ on November 12.

The two-track record is an emotional and personal exploration of pride in yourself and fulfilling ambitions.

The title-track refers to DESIREE’s identity as an intersex woman, with an aim of raising awareness of what it means to be an intersex person, as well as exploring the lineage of South African house music alongside influence from experimental composers.

The title of the opener ‘Khuluma Nami’ translates as “speak with me” in Zulu, and features soulful vocals from Jabulile Majola.

Speaking about the release, DESIREE said: “It is a reflection of my identity and values. Being a Black intersex woman from South Africa, I frequently perform in places where individuals like me are scarce. It comes with a significant sense of responsibility, knowing that I represent diverse groups who support me.”

DESIREE also noted it sounds “very different” to previous tracks she’s made, adding: “Intersexy is cinematic and sounds like a house music track that was created with an orchestra... There's a lot of strings and not so many electric sounds.”

She has also announced she is launching a label MMINO (which means “music” in Sepedi) as a home for the broads and evolving musical strands under the Afro house umbrella, as well as a tour of Africa with stops including Egypt, Kenya and South Africa.
