You have David Bowie to thank for LCD Soundsystem reforming
James Murphy also revealed he discussed making a collaborative album with Bowie prior to his death
The LCD Soundsystem reformation is in full swing, with new album ‘American Dream’ dropping in September.
We’re pretty excited about the gang getting back together, and if you are too, you can thank David Bowie.
In a new interview with Lauren Laverne on 6 Music, James Murphy, who worked closely with Bowie towards the end of his life, including playing percussion on his final album ‘Blackstar’, has revealed how his mind was made up to reunite LCD Soundsystem following a conversation with the ‘Ziggy Stardust’ singer.
Recalling the conversation, Murphy said: “I spent a good amount of time with David Bowie, and I was talking about getting the band back together. He said ‘does it make you uncomfortable?’ I said ‘yeah’, and he said ‘good, it should, you should be uncomfortable’.
“The first thing that popped into my head was ‘what do you know? You don’t know what it’s like to be uncomfortable’. I was imagining that if I was David Bowie, I’d just be walking around flipping everybody off – unless maybe Lou Reed is there. There are literally one or two people where nothing can be said about them. But that’s not who he was ever in his life, he was always making himself uncomfortable. There was such a great feeling of ‘you just don’t know what you are to anybody else’.”
Murphy also revealed that he had discussed making an album together with Bowie prior to the late artist’s death, and that he shied away from co-producing ‘Blackstar’ with Tony Visconto because he “got overwhelmed” by the thought of taking on the role and didn’t think he “belonged” at the controls in that situation.
