Costa Rica’s Club Vertigo has shut down
The San José venue said the impact of the pandemic has made it impossible to stay open in its current location
Costa Rica’s famous Club Vertigo has announced it is shutting down.
The nightspot, hosted at Centro Colon in the country’s capital city San José, said the impact of the global pandemic has made it impossible for the club to remain open in its current location.

In its 17 years of operation, Club Vertigo cemented itself as one of the best-loved clubs in Central America, and was influential in the rise in electronic music’s popularity in the region.
It regularly hosted world famous and local DJs, and was revered for its state-of-the-art Gary Stewart Audio soundsystem.
Owners Fredo and Elisa have said the GSA soundsystem remains in their possession, and that “it’s quite possible that someday soon we will find a new home for our system in Costa Rica”.

In a statement announcing the closure, the owners said: “We are very sad to announce that after 17 years and due to the global pandemic, we were left with no other choice but to close Vertigo at Centro Colon. We took on every challenge to keep Vertigo floating during the shutdown, but as the pandemic is still among us, it has made it impossible for us to remain at Centro Colon, where the Gran Casa Roja was created.
“It has been one incredible and beautiful journey and there are too many amazing moments to even mention here. What a ride, what a ride.”
