'Brat' crowned 2024 Word of the Year by Collins Dictionary

The new definition, inspired by Charli XCX's summer smash record, was picked out by Collins lexicographers for “establishing itself as an aesthetic and a way of life”

"Brat" has been named "Word of the Year" by Collins Dictionary.

Inspired by Charli XCX's summer mega-hit album 'Brat', the word was selected by Collins lexicographers due to being "one of the most talked-about words of 2024."

While "brat" already existed in Collins Dictionary well before "Brat Summer", as "If you call someone, especially a child, a brat, you mean that he or she behaves badly or annoys you" — the dictionary has added a new definition for 2024, which is "characterised by a confident, independent, and hedonistic attitude."

Following the release of 'Brat' earlier this Summer, Charli took to TikTok to detail her own definition of 'Brat' as "someone who has a pack of cigs, a Bic lighter and a strappy white top with no bra.”

“You’re just like that girl who is a little messy and likes to party and maybe says some dumb things sometimes,” she explained.

Collins' Charli XCX-inspired definition topped a list of 10 words selected by the dictionary as defining 2024, with the dictionary explaining that the word had "resonated with people globally and ‘brat summer’ established itself as an aesthetic and a way of life."
