Cocaine found in UK water supply

New study reports extent of water contamination

Cocaine has been found in the UK water supply.

Traces of the drug were discovered in water samples which had been tested by scientists as part of a study investigating levels of contamination.

Coke has got into the UK water supply despite purification treatments put in place by water companies. It appeared in samples as benzoylecgonine, which is what cocaine turns into after it has passed through the body. The study, which is the work of Drinking Water Inspectorate, also found high levels of caffeine as well as ibuprofen.

Though you won't be getting high after having a glass poured straight from the tap. A report by Public Health England said: "Estimated exposures for most of the detected compounds are at least thousands of times below doses seen to produce adverse effects in animals and hundreds of thousands below human therapeutic doses."
