​Charli XCX will explore the grief of losing SOPHIE on upcoming album

Charli XCX has shared that a track from her forthcoming album will explore feelings of grief over the passing of close friend and collaborator, SOPHIE.

The artist shared details of her sixth studio album, which she referred to as 'XCX6', during a cover interview with The Face, published yesterday (February 19).

The track is said to centre on the "shame" Charli felt on "reflecting on their relationship" following SOPHIE's death in 2021.

“There was a lot of distance between us because I was in awe of her and wanted to impress her,” she told The Face. “I didn’t feel like I was magical enough for this unbelievably magic person. And that makes me ashamed now I don’t have the opportunity to experience that anymore because she’s gone.

"I feel ashamed for being a coward. It’s hard to write about. I’m sad for myself that I didn’t experience all this person had to offer," Charli continues.

The pair began collaborating in 2015, working on XCX's 'Vroom Vroom' EP together as well as a host of other releases.

Following the Glasgow-born producer's tragic passing, Charli had tweeted: “I will honor Sophie in my own time personally, in my grief, through my memories, through my work, through writing things only I will read. But for now, all I can [say] is that I will miss her terribly."

Last year, Charli announced that she was working on the follow-up album to 2022's 'Crash'; described by The Face as “irresistible club-pop,” with the artist herself labelling it as her “most aggressive and confrontational record” yet also her "most vulnerable."

While the details of the new record are still largely under wraps, a 20-second preview of Charli's latest track ‘Von Dutch’ has been shared to Tiktok — and is available for pre-save now.
