Don't throw £100 and a day of your holiday down the drain
The British Consulate General in Amsterdam has launched a campaign calling on British tourists to look after their passports this summer. Young people travelling abroad for clubbing and festival holidays are asked to take particular care.
1175 Emergency Travel Documents had to be issued in 2015 for Brits who lost their passports while outside their home country, with around 50 per cent of applications coming from under 30s.
The ETDs cost £100 a time and involve spending a day of your holiday dealing with bureaucracy so the Consulate advises people to follow the below tips for looking after their passport.
Five top tips for looking after your passport while on holiday
1. Only carry your passport if you really need it.
2. Keep it in an inside pocket, preferably buttoned up
3. Stay aware of your surroundings at all times.
4. Take extra care in busy and crowded areas.
5. Do you have any other form of ID on you? If so, leave your passport in a safe place.
British Consul John Cameron-Webb said: “We see some people experiencing real difficulties that could have been avoided so the aim of our video is to encourage British visitors to take care of their belongings while in the Netherlands. We want British travellers to follow our top tips and watch the video and help them have a great holiday.”
