Britain's "oldest nightclub" launches blue plaque campaign
Halifax's Acapulco, known locally as "The Mighty Acca", has operated as a nightclub for some 65 years
Britain's "oldest nightclub" has launched a campaign to be recognised with a blue plaque.
According to Yorkshire Live, Halifax's Acapulco, known locally as “The Mighty Acca”, has been continuously operating as a nightclub since its launch in 1961. This year marks its 65th anniversary.

The venue's owner is now appealing for recognition with a Halifax Civic Trust Blue Plaque, calling the venue, which outdates the moon landing and the last time England won the World Cup, a "living piece of Halifax history."
"For 65 years, the Acapulco has been the beating heart of Halifax nightlife," owner Simon Jackson told Yorkshire Live. "It opened before man walked on the Moon, before the M62 was built, and before colour television arrived in British homes."
"This is more than a nightclub," he continues. "It is a shared rite of passage and a living part of our town’s story. A blue plaque would permanently mark that unique place in Halifax’s cultural and social history for future generations."

Acapulco has set up a GoFundMe page to raise the necessary funds for the plaque and its installation, which it says is £650. Anything above this target will be donated to local charity, Halifax Street Angels, which works to safeguard those who are vulnerable on nights out in the town centre.
In 2022, Acapulco hit headlines after selling off 100 pieces of its notoriously "sticky" carpet to raise money for charity; one fan of the venue asked if they could scatter their grandmother’s ashes in the club during the campaign.
