Brian Eno to release second iteration of colour-changing LED turntables

A limited run of 150 turntables will be available to buy next week

Brian Eno is set to release the second iteration of his signature colour-changing LED turntables in collaboration with London’s Paul Stopler Gallery.

A limited run of just 150 turntables, named Turntable II, is due to become available online on Tuesday, February 13. They’re currently on view at the gallery until March 9.

The first iteration of light-up record players was released more than two years ago, said to be a feat of sound and visual fusion. This time, the turntables are adapted to change colour independently and “seamlessly”.

Eno continues the “continuity” from the last run of record players - each made up of a platter and base, and will phase through a combination of “generative colourscapes”.

The speed at which the colour changes is programmed to move randomly and slowly, per a press release, and will allow the user to play both 33rpm and 45rpm vinyl.

“It’s the softness of these colours and the way they merge with each other that is so seductive,” Eno says. “When it doesn’t have to do anything in particular, like play a record, it is a sculpture."

Each turntable will set you back £20,000 (excluding VAT), and comes with a signature from Eno and an individual edition number engraved into the side of the base.

Speaking on his experiments with light and sound in 2018, Eno explained: “I’ve never ceased to be fascinated by the amazingly intricate, complex and unpredictable results produced by simple deterministic systems.”

“Out of simplicity, complexity arises. That is for me the most incredible idea of evolution theory and of cybernetics. John Cage once said: 'The function of Art is to imitate Nature in her manner of operation' and that has been an objective for me throughout my working life,” he said.
