Berghain is reopening – as an art gallery

Berghain will open to the public as an art gallery and will be raising funds to help keep the venue going through lockdown

Berghain is reopening – as an art gallery.

On September 9 the legendary Berghain nightclub will open its doors to the public for the first time since March.

Visitors will be able to view an exhibition featuring 85 Berlin-based artists including Wolfgang Tillmans, Sandra Mujinga, Tacita Dean, Christine Sun Kim, Shirin Sabahi and Olafur Eliasson.

The group show, titled Studio Berlin, will take place across the 3500-square-meter venue and will of course include Berghain's main room, the Panorama Bar and Säule.

It's been put together by the foundation of art collectors Christian and Karen Boros and proceeds from ticket sales will go toward keeping Berghain going through lockdown.

Berghain recently celebrated its 15th birthday with a suitably hedonistic party but thanks to the pandemic, the closest ravers have been able to get to it over the last six months is a version in Minecraft.

Other clubs in Berlin have been finding ways to generate income in the midst of the pandemic, with some reopening as beer and pizza gardens with strict no dancing rules.
