Bandcamp announces return of "Bandcamp Fridays"

The first will take place this Friday (September 2)

Bandcamp has announced that Bandcamp Fridays will make a return for its last stint of 2022 — taking place on September 2, October 7, November 4 and December 2.

This is the first news of Bandcamp Fridays since the last Friday, which took place on May 6. Since May 6, the platform has not mentioned anything about the future of the Friday series.

Bandcamp Fridays allow artists and labels releasing music to take back 93% of the money earned through sales, with the other 7% being used for processing fees and charges.

Launched on the first Friday of March in 2020, Bandcamp Fridays normally take place on one Friday a month (usually the first).

In a blog post on its website, Bandcamp writes that since starting the Friday scheme, “fans have paid artists and labels more than $78 million dollars”. The platform reiterates that this helps artists cover rent, bills, mortgages and other essential payments.

“If you’re among the nearly 800,000 fans who have participated, thank you,” the platform writes.

Earlier this year, Bandcamp was purchased by Epic Games, the developer and publisher behind Fortnite.

A statement released by Epic said: "Epic and Bandcamp share a mission of building the most artist-friendly platform that enables creators to keep the majority of their hard-earned money.

“Bandcamp will play an important role in Epic’s vision to build out a creator marketplace ecosystem for content, technology, games, art, music and more."

Outside of Bandcamp Fridays, the platform ensures that 82% of the money from music purchases goes to the artist and the label.
