Nile Rodgers, Flying Lotus, SHYGIRL and more pay tribute to SOPHIE

Tributes to SOPHIE have been pouring in from all corners of the music world since the pioneering musician died in a tragic accident last Saturday, January 30.

SOPHIE’s influence on music was significant, winning widespread admiration for unique singles such as ‘Bipp’, ‘Lemonade’, ‘Vyzee’ and the album ‘Oil of Every Pearl's Un-Insides’.

The Glasgow-born artist worked with a range of popstars and rappers such as Charli XCX, Madonna, Kim Petras, MØ, Vince Staples, Kendrick Lamar and Le1f, helping to revolutionise the sound of mainstream music with a gamechanging synthesis of experimental and pop sounds.

The collective mourning and glowing tributes attests to the impact SOPHIE had across the music world.

Chic’s Nile Rodgers called SOPHIE “one of the most innovative, dynamic, and warm persons I had the pleasure of working with”.

Vince Staples recalled SOPHIE’s unique character, saying: “Sophie was different you ain’t never seen somebody in the studio smoking a cigarette in a leather bubble jacket just making beats not saying one word.

“And don’t let the verse be deep or heartfelt cause she stopping the computer and walking outside until you get bacc on some gangsta shit

He also recalled a time when “Sophie walked in the studio unannounced wearing Mickey Mouse ears on the way home from Disneyland with @JIMMYEDGAR like “he has something for you” played 745 took a water bottle and left. Ima miss the homie.”

Christine and the Queens wrote: “Sophie was a stellar producer, a visionary, a reference. Sophie rebelled against the narrow, normative society by being an absolute triumph, both as an artist and as a woman. I can’t believe this. We need to honor and respect her memory and legacy. Cherish the pioneers.”

Arca said “you helped me feel less alone throughout the years”, adding: “to have been a part of each others’ journey, to have made music with you remains a formative experience that I will always cherish. your genius, playfulness, boldness, and vision continue to shine brightly through the expanse of your art.”

Shygirl wrote: “A friend I’ve never not been in awe of, it’s so hard to believe I won’t have more memories with her”.

Sega Bodega wrote: “Had you only ever been a close friend to me, whose presence in life was nothing short of a never ending gift, this would have been one of the greatest losses of my life. Had you only ever been an artist I truly obsessed over from afar, who changed my entire way of seeing music, this would have been one of the greatest losses of my life. But you were both, creating a truly special kind of pain. You entered into my life like an atomic bomb with your work and from the second I heard bipp I knew you had me forever. The world felt that. I can’t say much more as even this is too painful but I wanted to say something. My hero, my friend. I will love you forever.”

Slayter wrote: “she invented a new style and sound and her influence will live forever in music. she inspired me so much. rest in peace sophie.”

Grimes called SOPHIE “immortal through art”.

Flying Lotus said: “Without a doubt some of the most interesting sounds I’ve heard had come from her. All respects to one of the pioneers and visionaries of the craft.”

FKA twigs called SOPHIE “a star of our generation”.
