A Tribe Called Quest say the Grammys “fucked up” by snubbing them
The hip hop group received no nominations for their final album
A Tribe Called Quest have hit out at the Grammys again following the hip hop group’s final album ‘We got it from Here... Thank You 4 Your service’ receiving zero nominations at the 2017 awards.
When the nominations were first announced in November, Q-Tip wrote “Fuck da grammys!!!” on Twitter in response to the snub.
He also posted videos on Instagram, in one of which he said: “"Y'all think it's some sort of caveat because this is the first time that no white man was nominated in no major categories and shit? We were the most black, cultured group out. That’s all we stood on. That’s what we represented, This last Tribe album, this stands with everyone else’s shit that’s up there. I don’t give a fuck.”
Appearing on the Sway Calloway’s Sway In The Morning radio show yesterday, ATCQ’s Ali Shaheed Muhammad and frequent collaborator of the group Consequence opened up further on the topic.
Consequence said: “Just to be honest with y’all, we all thought we was going home with the statue.”
He noted that the album was late member Phife Dawg’s “last effort on Earth … I want you to understand the magnitude of that,” adding: “They fucked up.... Anybody that come back 18 years after a hiatus and performs the year before, naturally you would assume that I should have something on my mantle in about 12 months!”
Muhammad also responded to Grammy Chair Emeritus Jimmy Jam, who commented that ATCQ’s performance at the 2017 awards was an acknowledgement, stating: “To say that the group performed and that should be your consolation prize, I think is very disrespectful to the art that you put forth.”
