Watch Toolroom’s ‘Odyssey’ Film About the Art of DJing
“DJing is about creating a journey; it’s about telling a story. And to do that you need time”
Toolroom Records has created a short film called ‘Odyssey’ which focuses on the art of DJing.
In the 17-minute clip, label boss Mark Knight chats to Danny Tenaglia, Roger Sanchez (pictured), Andy C and more about their experiences as DJs and how their careers have progressed throughout the years.
The video also explores how the art of extended DJ sets are in danger of extinction, as more and more club and festival line-ups continue to favour having as many names on their bill as possible, which cuts set times.
Danny Tenaglia, when asked how he feels about playing ‘marathon-type’ extended sets, said: “Playing eight-hour sets to me was a regular job. Everybody worked 9am-5pm, but I was starting to work 9pm-5am. So that’s what was normal to me. Still to this day, I don’t consider that a marathon.”
Mark Knight said: "The project has been a labour of love and features some of the best DJs I know working today. I hope you enjoy watching it as much as we did making it.”
Roger Sanchez also had nuggets of wisdom to share, about how “DJing is about creating a journey; it’s about telling a story. And to do that you need time.”
Mark Knight is about to embark on his ‘All Knight Long’ tour which features him playing six-plus hour-long sets. You can find out more about the tour here and watch the short film below.
