Major Lazer draw half a million fans to historic Cuba show
The Diplo-led group are the first major American artists to play the country following the thaw of Cold War hostility
Major Lazer became the first major US dance act to play in Cuba at the weekend in a historic gig that marked their largest ever show, with 500,000 Cubans attending.
Relations between the two countries had been severed for over half a century following the Cold War, but diplomatic ties were eventually restored in 2015, enabling Diplo, Walshy Fire and Jillionaire to bring their “Peace Is The Mission” message to the Caribbean.
The party was hosted in front of the US Embassy in the capital city Havana on March 6, serving as the opening concert for the Musicabana international music festival that takes place in May.
Writing about the event on Facebook, Major Lazer posted: “To the people and the country of Cuba: thank you. We have been humbled by your love.”
