22-year-old arrested after car “deliberately” driven into Birmingham nightclub crowd
Five people were reportedly taken to hospital after the incident
A 22-year-old man has been arrested after a car was “deliberately” driven into a crowd outside Birmingham venue Tunnel Club over the weekend, the BBC reports.
According to the BBC, the incident took place in the early hours of Friday, October 4. Police were called to the Livery Street venue shortly after the incident took place at around 3:AM.
A freshers event featuring local DJs was taking place inside the long-running venue on Thursday night when the car reportedly ploughed into attendees gathered outside the club before driving away.
On Friday morning, police said that they were searching for the driver involved in the reported “hit and run” incident, saying (via Birmingham Live): “We're treating this incident as a targeted attack and are stepping up our patrols in the area today for reassurance.”
Police report that six people were injured, with five of those taken to hospital for treatment. Two still remained in hospital on Saturday, October 5, although their injuries were not considered life-threatening.
A young man has now been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, and a second man - who was also taken to hospital - arrested on suspicion of affray, according to police.
Det Ch Insp Dave Sproson from Birmingham Police said in a statement: “At this stage, we believe this to have been an isolated and deliberate attack linked to an earlier incident inside the nightclub.”
He added that police are “working hard to understand what exactly happened and why”, but the incident was believed to be a “targeted” attack.
“The investigation continues to make good progress, but we’d still appeal for anyone with information or mobile phone images to get in touch via our dedicated website,” he said.
