18-year-old dies following medical emergency at North Wales' Tonnau Festival

Organisers ended the event after the tragedy in the early hours of Sunday morning

An 18-year-old girl has died following a "severe medical emergency" at Tonnau Festival in North Wales, which took place over the weekend.

According to North Wales Live, emergency services were called to Carreglwyd Estate in Anglesey at 1:45AM on Sunday (July 12) after the teenager became unwell at the festival. The 18-year-old later died in hospital.

A statement from North Wales Police confirmed that the death is being treated as "unexpected", and that investigations are "ongoing".

Tonnau Festival, a family-oriented three-day event that takes place on the same site as Gottwood Festival, featured DJ sets from Jamz Supernova, Mr. Scruff, and Lady Lykez. The festival shared a statement saying it was "deeply saddened" over the death of an attendee following a "severe medical emergency".

"From the moment the attendee became unwell, our on-site welfare teams, security, and emergency medical staff responded immediately," the statement reads. "Paramedics and welfare personnel did everything they could to provide emergency care, but unfortunately, they later died in hospital."

Following the tragedy, organisers cancelled the remainder of its Sunday programming to "allow emergency services and local authorities to conduct their necessary work", and called on attendees to "vacate the site when it is safe to do so"."We appreciate the understanding and cooperation of all our attendees, staff and volunteers during this incredibly difficult situation. Out of respect for the family’s privacy, we will be making no further comment at this time," the statement adds. "Our thoughts and hearts are with the family."

Investigators have urged members of the public "not to speculate on the circumstances of the death", and have asked that "anybody with information that could assist our enquiries should contact us via our website or by calling 101, quoting reference O110259."
