When Big nights each week
Music House and techno
The ravers of Amsterdam show little concern for the drizzle as they prepare for the penultimate night of this year’s ADE – a week-long industry summit and festival of electronic music. A mixture of well-dressed technocrats, beat tourists and friendly locals, they shuffle towards Studio 80’s red-lit doorway. Inside, Berlin’s famous Watergate club and Mr C’s incendiary Superfreq label are celebrating 10 years in the game.
Watergate’s dancefloor in Room 1 looks like a birthday cake iced with happy faces, its central podium elevating a lucky 10 like candles in the middle, shimmering to a blissful array of techno, jackin’ house and acid from Sebastian Wilck, Stassy, Heidi and a playful Miss Kitten. And there’s plenty of party in Room 2, a split-level space where Russ Yallop and Clockwork blend the boundaries of house, disco and techno. Yet the night is summed up best by Mr C, strolling casually off the decks after a storming set and into a floor of new-found friends as the party stretches long into the morning. When the race is as good as this, the finishing line is all in your head.
