The man with the golden touch comes correct again with an inch-perfect mix for the inimitable Watergate series. Did you expect anything less? His DJ sets are the stuff of legend (recent marathon sessions at D.Edge and Corsica Studios left certain Mixmag staffers in a blissed-out haze), his productions are essential (a spot-on rework of Tiefschwarz’s ‘Corporate Butcher’ was our office anthem of 2011) and the Hamburg-based Diynamic collective he’s part of is home to fast-rising stars like David August, Stimming and H.O.S.H. Seventeen varied tracks are tucked into an hour and a half and prove Solomun’s versatility as a DJ: he can warm up a floor with sweet slices of disco and Stardust-style house and move into the far reaches of the morning with deep, goosebump-inducing grooves.
This mix gets going with Lucy Pearl’s r’n’b stomper ‘Don’t Mess With My Man’ and the cheeky punk-funk swagger of ‘Family Business’ by Supermen Lovers. A satisfying dose of 4/4 euphoria comes via Honom’s mind- melting ‘Bedcat’ and Vindahl’s lights-down, hip twistin’ ‘Sometimes’. The switch into darker, percussive territory comes when the Koze remix of Heiko Voss’ ‘I Think About You’ slides in and rolls out the ice-cold boogie that is Solomun’s particular speciality. Massive cuts from Dax Riders and Casino Times take the mix stratospheric, ending things on a high. Perfect.
