The backlash against Champagne-style UK garage and funky has well and truly kicked off. Sickly-sweet diva vocal licks and fun carnival vibes are being steam-
rolled by oil spill-thick basslines and stark, abrasive drums. Step up Detboi, a man who’s made his fair share of candy-coated bangers, and whose ‘Darkside’ EP now adds to the murky spirit sweeping the UK underground. The Dublin-based producer uses a skeletal two-step template, framing swung, danceable beats in an atmosphere of ice-cold dread. Thick swathes of low end vibrate throughout, and any piano chord or vocal sample that floats into earshot is quickly suffocated. Soundboys and girls who like their garage stripped back to swivelling rhythms and intense bass will dig this.
