A new direction and new label for Depeche in 2013? The times may well be a-changing, but the sound of Gahan and Gore, in collaboration with producer Ben Hillier and additional programming by Fever Ray’s Chris Berg, has been distilled to pure blues-techno. Opener ‘Welcome To My World’ is just as big an opener as ‘In Chains’ was, and new single ‘Heaven’, which recalls The The, is surprisingly far from the best material on here. ‘My Little Universe’ and the bluesy, John Lee Hooker stomp of ‘Slow’ both hit the spot, while the booming ‘Should Be Higher’ recalls ‘Personal Jesus’. And while it could have been clipped of a couple of tracks, overall the devil is in the glitchy, Fever-ish new details – and Dave has rarely sounded better.
