Autechre discuss being compared to Aphex Twin in rare MTV interview
MTV tapped the IDM legends up in 1994
A rare interview from 1994 with Autechre members Rob Brown and Sean Booth has surfaced, featuring the duo discussing their sound profile and why they get compared to Aphex Twin.
The interview, which aired September 15, 1994 via MTV Europe’s Party Zone TV, offers a unique perspective on the early stages of IDM, the genre pioneered by Autechre and others in the early 90s. It’s also interesting to see the duo being featured on MTV as the outlet is focused on drastically different topics than it was back then.
During the conversation, Autechre get asked why they get compared to Aphex Twin, to which Booth describes there isn’t much similarities to their material.
“The only reason we get grouped with Aphex Twin is because we do things that are original and we still do dance music”.
