An innovative YouTube user has customised a Technics SL-1200 turntable, enabling it to play digital files without the use of a computer or external vinyl emulation system such as Traktor or Serato.

Андрей Анацко's engineering is extremely impressive. An XILINK FPGA board that is designed for audio playback and manipulation has been fitted into the decks, and rewiring has been done to link an SD card and transform the function of buttons.

Prominent features of a CDJ or external DVS system are present: it can play timecode vinyl with scratch, spinback and pitch-shifting functionality, and set cue points and loops. It also still functions as a standard Technics deck and can play normal records.

It's controlled through the Start/Stop, 33 and 45 buttons, which are used to move through tracks and folders on the SD card and select them to play.

In one of the YouTube video’s descriptions Анацко has written: “Handmade Digital Vinyl System (DVS), built-in [to a] vinyl turntable Technics SL-1200. [It is like] an analog Serato or Traktor Scratch, but is completely autonomous. The computer and the sound card is not necessary.

"To work [you only need] 2 turntables and mixer. Content is stored on a micro SD cards in the players. It is possible to install two hot cues for each track with automatic saving on the SD card, installing realtime loops.”

The videos are in Russian, but handily DJ Tech Tools has edited a clip together with English descriptions explaining what is happening on this one-of-a-kind product. Check it out below.
