Snapped: Zouk, Singapore

It goes down in December at Zouk Singapore

We sent one of our London team out to play some records, meet the crew and get to the bottom of this legendary nightclub before it moves venue in the New Year to nearby Clark Quay.

While this move will upset many long serving locals, it actually represents growth. It's abundantly clear from our visit that the dance music scene in SE Asia is enjoying rude health in 2015, and Zouk has been its clubbing nucleus since the days of Shoom and Clink Street back home in London. It's not difficult to see why.

Everything about this club would remind you of the big ones in Ibiza. The branding, the decor, the sound, the table service, the VIP, the bottles, the art, the canons and the lightshow are all heavily influenced by the biggest, most opulent Balearic discos. Split across three rooms, the largest is Zouk itself (1500 capacity), Velvet Underground for deeper house and hip hop and Phuture where anything goes.

Warming the main room on a packed Saturday for Dutch EDM pinup Dannic, Mixmag's DJ's were given the coveted 12.30-2 slot. By any club's measure, this is absolutely peak time. Justin Martin headlined Velvet Underground, weaving his bright Californian magic in the inimitable Dirtybird style.

But make no mistake, EDM rules the roost at Zouk itself. Having free reign on that system (and this really is one of the world's best) means the tunes have to be big, so after a killer warm-up by the resident, DJ Hong, we took to the decks with a clear brief: Make Some Noise.

To our delight, the crowd were more open to deeper music than we had been told to expect. Fun tunes, big drops and fast mixing were key. It was Patrick Topping and Green Velvet's 'Shining', Kry Wolf's new remix of Delta Heavy's 'Punish my Love', Format B's singalong stepper 'Chunky' and Riva Starr's 'Velvet Zone' that made the ice cannons blast and the many strobes flicker. While this is hardly underground, who said it always has to be one way or the other? The ravers "got it" just as much as the singalong anthems provided by Dannic to close out the main room to a hero's welcome.
