Netflix’s ode to the beginnings of hip hop, The Get Down, has been cancelled after one season.

Directed by Baz Luhrmann, The Get Down was the most expensive original series in Netflix history, costing $120 million to produce and was constantly plagued by behind-the-scenes trouble.

It also failed to garner an audience like other original Netflix shows like Orange Is The New Black and Stranger Things.

Luhrmann took to Facebook to explain to fans of the show why The Get Down would not be returning.

The Moulin Rouge and Australia filmmaker wrote: “When I was asked to come to the center of The Get Down to help realize it, I had to defer a film directing commitment for at least two years. This exclusivity has understandably become a sticking point for Netflix and Sony.

“The simple truth is, I make movies. And the thing with movies is, that when you direct them, there can be nothing else in your life.”
