Disused hospital ballroom to host Melbourne party series
The eerie site will be Melbourne Music Week's 2015 hub
The disused basement of an old Melbourne hospital will be the site of a series of parties next month.
Melbourne Music Week will adopt the former Royal Women's Hospital ballroom as its flagship venue from November 13-20, hosting a range of events in conjunction with Good Manners, Animals Dancing, Thick As Thieves and Stable Music. Eric Duncan, Monolake, and Cobblestone Jazz will all headline parties at the eerie venue, which takes over from last year's hub at the Queen Victoria Market.
According to the festival website, "MMW is respectfully repurposing the basement, its maze of surrounding abandoned offices, kitchens, plant and steam rooms, as a place for dancing once more for this year's event. Retrofitting with lighting and sound, the existent parquetry floors will also be restored."
As always, there's a range of other club culture events on across the city as part of the festival, including a free series of afternoon DJ sets and screening of footwork film Mop and Glow. There's even a Melbourne Shuffle workshop for those keen to bust it out.
