Blade Runner’s hotly-anticipated sequel is set to arrive in October next year, and now the first plot details of the film are beginning to surface.

The film’s director Denis Villeneuve has spoken to Entertainment Weekly, revealing that the action will take place in a climate change-driven apocalypse “a few decades later” on from the original’s 2019 setting.

He said: “The climate has gone berserk – the ocean, the rain, the snow is all toxic. Things seem to have generally become more horrible since the first movie, as humanity has continually trashed the planet and ignored the consequences.

“It might not be particularly subtle, but it does seem appropriately Blade Runner-y; after all most animals had been eradicated and replaced by synthetics by the time of the first film. Nature is obviously next to go.”

Villeneuve also spoke about the influence Blade Runner had on him upon its release in 1982, stating: “I remember the opening sequence perfectly. That note of music; seeing Los Angeles in 2019; that smog; that darkness. It’s really the movie that gave birth to my desire to become a director.” He also added that with such a personal attachment to the project that “failure is not an option.”

Head to EW’s website to check out some new concept art from the film, depicting a dark and gloomy Los Angeles.
