Ross From Friends
Google ‘Ross From Friends’ and you’ll have to scroll past David Schwimmer’s IDMb profile and Ross Geller’s Wiki entry, but soon you’ll find the sounds of Felix Weatherall, who kicked off London-based label Breaker Breaker with a dreamy EP titled ‘Alex Brown’ last year. It sold out almost instantly, leading to lo-fi imprint Lobster Theremin putting out rugged, r’n’b-infused follow-up ‘You’ll Understand’ on its Distant Hawaii sub-label – which sold out long before it even hit the shelves. Move fast if you want the next 12”.
‘You’ll Understand’ EP is out on Distant Hawaii now
Sita Abellán
Recognisable as the weed-smoking sidekick in Rhianna’s ‘Bitch Better Have My Money’ video, model Sita Abellán has been delivering hard-hitting techno sets at high-profile New York clubs and parties, including a residency at Flash Factory, her style more Berghain bender than fash-pack soundtrack. She got an early start as a teenage DJ in her home town of Murcia, Spain, recently played the HARD Summer festival in LA and is about to embark on a US club tour. Forget any model-turned-DJ preconceptions you might have had.
See www.sitabellan.com for tour dates
Bobby Nourmand
Cutting his teeth as a DJ in Manhattan, 32-year-old Bobby Nourmand felt unfulfilled by simply mixing other people’s tracks together. So he turned to classic rock to inspire his dance music productions. Drawing on a library of sounds that would faze most producers, including tracks by the likes of The Doors and the Beatles, Nourmand has created darkly entrancing house records which have caught the ear of tastemakers like The Magician. It may not be wise to meet your heroes; sampling them’s another matter. ‘
S M O K I N’ J O E’ is out on Potion Records now
Joey Daniel
If you’re trying to make your way in the world of techno, getting the call to join Marco Carola’s Music On is as good as it gets. OK, not as good as winning a lifetime’s supply of black T-shirts, but still, pretty good. Rotterdam DJ Joey Daniel has become a mainstay of Music On at Amnesia this year, after debuting in 2015. A self-confessed sucker for low-end dubby tech, his sets are seriously transfixing, and 10 years’ graft has got him gigs at Elrow, Time Warp and Awakenings, too. Catch him on the Terrace while you can.
Music On is at Amnesia, Ibiza every Friday until September 30
CKtrl
It might have come a little late in the day, but we reckon Lewisham-born Bradley Miller might have made this year’s best album for lazing in the grass on long summer days. The 23-year-old has been hosting his own NTS show since 2011 and has self-released two EPs. But on ‘INDi’ he singles himself out as a man to watch. Jazz, hip hop, r’n’b and grime are all put through the blender on the album, which features vocals from the likes of Roses Gabor and Tyson McVey. Expect the megastars to come calling for him any minute now.
‘INDi’ is out now
Golf Clap
Detroit duo Golf Clap know a thing or two about throwing a party. As regulars at renowned clubs like Output in New York and Primary in Chicago, and at festivals like Movement and Mysteryland, they’ve built an army of fans for their relentlessly energetic four-deck house sets. Pushing a Dirtybird-esque sound, they’ve won props for their releases too, with their tracks going out on labels like Madtech and Simma Black as well as their own Country Club Disco. Look out for them bringing the party to Europe very soon.
