Ten Tracks That Defined Coachella Weekend One

These are the big ones from weekend one of the mega Californian desert festival

Last weekend marked the first big party of the Southern Californian summer, with über-hip desert festival Coachella knocking out its first weekend in vintage style. In and amongst all of the deafening dad rock, vulgar t-shirts and slightly creepy on-stage make-out sessions, there were a lot of massive dance tracks dropped, and here are some of our picks from weekend one.

Shiba San – 'Okay'

The first big one of our weekend was Shiba San's neurotic bass driver 'Okay' at the Haciendays pool party. Aussie tropical house merchant Thomas Jack dropped this weapon, which was one of the big deep tracks of last year, and its tumbling bassline melted the dancefloor by the pool.

Herbert – 'Strong' (Catz n Dogz remix)

Fresh off the press, this twisted new track from Matthew Herbert got the remix treatment from Catz n Dogz, and was dropped by Jon Hopkins at the Yuma stage as the sun was starting to set. Watch out for this track, it's going to be a big one.

Hot Natured - 'Benediction'

There probably aren't many acts that can aurally summarise the SoCal sunset lurve vibes like Jamie Jones and Lee Foss' Hot Natured project. Fronted by regional heroine Anabel Englund, the group dished out the chunky, 80s throwback jams, with 'Benediction' being one of the stand-out tracks.

Caribou – 'Odessa'

In what was probably our favourite set of the weekend, Canadian Dan Snaith's Caribou lived up to every bit of hype that's been rolling behind them for the last few years. Though their set was packed with emotional dancey numbers, we were blown away by their live rendition 'Odessa', the opening track of their 2010 album 'Swim'.

Nero – Won't You (Be There) (Remix unknown)

After being all soft and housey for most of Friday, we returned to our good ol' dubstep nest and were thoroughly impressed by Nero's theatrical production and the power of their vocalist Alana Watson. We asked around but have no idea who this remix was courtesy of, but it just about blew the Ferris wheel over.

Kiko & Olivier Giacomotto - Beautiful Place

This ominous, synthy beauty from Kiko & Olivier Giacomotto was the highlight of Lee Burridge's superb set on Saturday afternoon at the Haciendays pool stomp. Low-riding, planet-pioneering and ultimately filthy, we hope we'll be hearing this one terrifying bros and deflating lilos at more pool parties this summer.

FKA Twigs - 'Water Me'

After what was an absolutely barnstorming year, FKA Twigs descended on Coachella and rocked the Gobi stage Saturday night. The delicate, Arca-produced 'Water Me' was our pick of her set.

Luca Luzano & Mr Ho - 'Different Circles'

Luca Cazal was on fine form at the Hot Creations party on Sunday, and he dropped warm, dystopian bruiser 'Different Circles' from Klasse Recordings don Luca Luzano and set the place off. Twisted, beat broken and neck deep, this record fit the vibes from the Hot Creations showcase perfectly.

Gesaffelstein - 'Obsession'

It's no secret that we're huge fans of French techno boss and champion cigarette smoker Gesaffelstein. He took the rare opportunity to warm-up for EDM's new prince Kygo on Sunday night by spanking it with a bit of industrial dread, and we lost our shit when he dropped the riled-up 'Obsession'.

Bonobo - 'Flashlight'

As the surprise headliner at the Do Lab stage on Sunday night, Bonobo brought a record bag packed with his signature earthy, softcore jams and put together one of the most memorable sets of the weekend. His latest track 'Flashlight', which dropped last October, was our pick of the bunch.
