The best DJ, club, act and tune of the last 25 years

Mixmag is 25 years old next month. Yes, we can't believe it either. As part of our massive silver anniversary celebrations we're doing a huge online vote to discover the very best DJ, club, tune and act of the last quarter century.

You'll no doubt be keen to have your say so high tail it over to the Mixmag 25 Awards section on the home page and get voting. Then come back here and row about it.

Look out for the special, 25th Birthday Spectacular issue, out April 17, with a cover and free mix CD that's gonna blow your minds!

Cheers

Hey

Lots of good choices here, I found it practically impossible to choose my favourite tune of all time and since voting have changed my mind at least 8 times!!!

Best DJ : Oakenfold, kicked off the proceedings in The UK and started his dj career the same time I started my clubbing career.

Best Act: I went for Daft Punk it was a close run thing but after their 2 tours of England in 97 and 07 were the best shows I've ever seen live.

Best Club: I guess Ibiza will rule the ratings but I have a soft spot for Turnmills and the gallery.

Best tune: Access by misjah and Tim was so far ahead of it's time I still get away with playing it out to this day.

coombsie | Sun, 04/05/2008 - 12:17

What I voted

best dj = paul van dyk
best act = prodigy
best club = gatecrasher @ republic

hi

WHAT A SLETION

dj doomz | Fri, 04/04/2008 - 22:24

What I voted

DJ: It has to be Pete Tong! Where would we all be without that bloke!
Act: Orbital. Because they're from Kent like me and remind me of muddy fields.
Club: Liquid Room Tokyo. Because I had the best night of my life there (Jeff Mills 1996).
Tune: K-Klass: Show Me Love. It's on Cream Anthems (David Morales Mix) and it just makes me want to dance my ass off everytime I hear it, even 13 years later! I never get bored of that tune.

Cheers from an older, now sober raver!

Best DJ - Paul

Best DJ - Paul Oakenfold
Best Dance Act - Above and Beyond
Best Club - Home/We love @ Space
Best Tune - Orbital - Belfast

It's hard to pick best ever's.

DJ - Frankie Knuckles has to be a shoot since he invented house music in the first place.

Best dance act - A&B relatively new compared to say the chemical brothers or someone like that

Best club - would've loved to have voted my local clubs lush @ kellys from when i lived in northern ireland and now nation in liverpool but feel one of the big 7 in ibiza will scoop it.

Best tune - too many too mention so plumped for belfast!

Weasel | Tue, 01/04/2008 - 19:37

my vote

best dj - paul oakenfold
best dance act - the prodigy
best club night - big beat boutique

the first three are very easy for me to answer, while there are 1 or 2 others I could have chosen, the 3 i picked are the ones that give me the best memories and are the ones I have enjoyed more than anyone else in that catergory. The best tune one is hard as there are so many amazing tunes from the last 25 years, all with different reasons and to pick (the best) one is very very hard, i've ended up choosing...

Thank you Mixmag for 25 years (I've only been on-board for the last 4)! I wish I could get the results right away! Though when I think of my all time favorite tracks, it puts me in a good mood with a lot of great tunes going through my head! Wouldn't you agree? My votes:

Best DJ: Steve Angello
Best Dance Act: Daft Punk

02kreid | Tue, 06/05/2008 - 16:41

Past 25 years?

That's a large timescale isn't it?

Guess it would have to be people who actually helped change, shape or develop the scene - rather than fucking muppets like Tiesto who just endlessly play a genre that has been around before them and never changes or innovates.

Guys like Kevin Saunderson, Alfredo or Sasha i guess. I agree with acts such as Orbital and Prodigy as they both innovated. Club would have to be Fabric.

Tune is a hard one. Have to come back to that..................

born in the last 25 years?

the last 25 years..........

DJ; Pete tong - although i dont particually like what he plays now he has done more for dance music in 'the last 25' than anyone else i think.

Dance Act: i would say the prodigy but i think thats highhly debatable topic anyhow.

Club: Studio 54 was the first real superclub i guess, but i never went. Hacienda me thinks.

Tune: new order - blue monday. i have an original copy from 1983, the only thing that really dated it badly i think was the kick drum which they put more 'umph' into later in '87ish, but now with minimal people like kick drums which sound like hampsters farts anyway.

unfortunalty people like Tiesto will win most these awards, not that he's not talented, Musically he is clearly gifted, but what he has done in the last 25 years (10 really) is commercialize trance. which i dont think deserves a 25 year music award. the goog thing for him though is that going commercial you will get more votes as more people know who you are!

merlinmarshall | Wed, 23/04/2008 - 23:42

eh?

No offence intended mate, but.........

Wasn't Sudio 54 more than 25 years ago? It started in 1977, and finished........? I think it was before 1983 anyway, maybe not, I have been wrong before. The owners were busted in 1979 though and got 3 and a half years, but I am not sure if the club continued? It wasn't a great club, it concerned itself with clothes, cocaine and being seen, the music wasn't the centre of it.

Also -

"unfortunalty people like Tiesto will win most these awards, not that he's not talented, Musically he is clearly gifted."

Eh?

How?

I would say he is the least 'musically' gifted out of all the top djs right now. He is a one trick pony, a master of copying what Oakenfold, Paul Van Dyk and a few others did before him, which works well with a large group of people fucked out their heads, but musically? Hardly music for your life.

He is successful, but so was Hitler to a point.

He will probably win or finish highly, which is wrong, but when the majority of voters are 16 - 22, they dont remember 1988 - 2002 as a clubbing experience. It will be the same in five years,

The club should be either hacienda, gatecrasher, renaissance, space, fabric or cream

The dj? Frankie Knuckles, John Peel, Sasha, Carl Cox, or Pete Tong?

The tune - ???????? fuck knows! A top ten is hard enough. You would all have to admit that Energy 52 - Cafe del mar is probably one of the strongest contenders.

The act - the prodigy, daft punk, the chemicals or underworld.

anything other than those is stupid.

jackdaddy2008 | Thu, 24/04/2008 - 02:15

The Prodigy deserve to win best act

Best DJ = Andy C
Best Act = The Prodigy
Best Club = Hospitality at Heaven
Best Tune = The Prodigy - No Good (start the dance)

Choosing my best tune was hard cos i wasn't sure about "Underworld - Pearl's girl", "Pendulum - Another Planet" or "The Prodigy - Smack my Bitch up" too.

No offence to all the "Tiesto" kids

no offence to all you Tiesto kids.
but he is only as famous as he has purely dj'd into a scene which is mainstream.
he hasn't helped in the rise of dance culture or pioneered a sound or scene.

guys like Laurent Garnier, Dave Clarke, Marshal Jefferson and LTJ Bukem have all been at the forefront of there scene for decades and rightly deserve "Best DJ" awards.

early dance and rave culture was about the music, none of this "Tiesto DJ Stadium Tours", DJ's should be heard and not seen. Not waving there hands in the air at the end of a set getting rounds of applause.

Turn on, Tune in and Rave on!!!

my awards would be -

BEST DJ - Laurent Garnier

BEST ACT - Chemical Brothers/ Underworld

BEST CLUB/NIGHT - Pressure @ The Arches, Glasgow

BEST TUNE - Leftfield - Song of Life

wilson1981uk | Fri, 25/04/2008 - 17:21

well said mate.

well said mate.

You know hes gonna finish in the top 3 though eh!?

Its all went too fickle, people are easily bought in todays marketeers world. There isn't the togetherness that there was, the hippy in the scene has died.

Bigger means better for many, and money making means you are good.

I love Bukem, Clarke and Garnier (I have seen jefferson live - he was murder) for what they have done, but in my opinion there are only 3 truly outstanding candidates for the dj award-

Pete tong (for his show and boundary breaking)
Carl Cox (have you seen him live!)
Sasha (when the es were good, there was no one better)

I personally would give it to Carl Cox for his international appeal, longevity and live performance.

Any of the 3 would deserve it though.

jackdaddy2008 | Fri, 25/04/2008 - 22:25

alicegr | Sun, 27/04/2008 - 19:09

A "Hurtling into middle age" vote.

Best DJ = Joey Negro, for his musical knowledge, depth and diversity he has helped to shaped the UK house scene from its very beginnings twenty years ago and has never jumped on the latest bandwagon.

Best Act = Full intention, Started out doing remixes on the original DMC 12"s along with Sasha etc.., these guys are behind more tunes than you realise and unlike sasha they haven't dissapeared up their own back sides yet. Purposely didn't go for any of the more obvious choices as they have been lauded enough in my opinion.

Best Club night = Out in the Sticks @ The Bluenote in Todmorden.
This night was the only place in the North of England, that played proper US house music week in week out. It was widely regarded as a funky house night by the uninitiated but in reality had much more about it than that, it ran for nine years in the Basement of a greasy spoon cafe in a small town called Todmorden and was nice and dark and sweaty and always stunk of weed, a proper place to get lost in it.

Best Tune = Shalor - I'm in love, nice deep vocal house music, just the way I like it, was a big tune at the Hacienda a couple of years before I started going out, The first time I heard it I thought "this is it"!!.

You may have noticed that I'm getting on a bit so go easy on me kids!!.

playsomethinggood | Sun, 27/04/2008 - 21:03

That tracks on youtube -

That tracks on youtube - VERY LOVEY DOVEY!

Full intention are a tight production outfit, but live??????????

jackdaddy2008 | Mon, 28/04/2008 - 03:25

This was tough!! But i went

This was tough!! But i went with my instinct! For anyone that has experienced Richie Hawtins awesome sets they will surely understand my choice to vote him best DJ. Fabric for me is the ultimate super club that has done so much for dance music since it opened covering all genres from hip hop to electro to dnb to hard techno. More dance acts have gone to international superstardom because of this club than any other. Daft Punk was the easy option for their undenied contribution to dance music past and present. As for my favorite tune... well, "Who's Afraid of Detroit?" Av it!!

mattgunnner | Mon, 28/04/2008 - 13:21

Hmm!! Good point

Me thinks I didn't read the rules properly, OK If I have to pick a dance act from the last 25 years who can cut it live (and I like)it would have to be Daft Punk.
P.S I'm an old romantic!! lol.

P.P.S BT Was pretty good live a few years back.
